What am I celebrating on tattoo Tuesday?

March 17, 2015

dairy-queen-celebrates-75-years-free-cone--001The world’s first Dairy Queen opened in Joliet serving ice cream cones for five and 10 cents. (Dairy Queen)

Dairy Queen celebrated its 75th anniversary on March 16.

I thought I was late to the party, but it turns out that the celebration was early.  The first Dairy Queen shop opened in Illinois on June 22, 1940 – so we can look forward to more festivities.  The company, however, chose to note the occasion by giving out free ice cream cones at various locations on March 16.

dairy queenIf you are not near a Dairy Queen store – or if they are still closed for the winter – or if you feel like doing it yourself, check out BraveTart’s recipe for a copycat Dairy Queen Blizzard here.

The next question is, can I find a Dairy Queen tattoo?

Well, yes . . .

What am I looking out for on tattoo Tuesday?

March 10, 2015

Today in 537 the first Siege of Rome and the start of the First Gothic War.  Actually, Rome had been sacked by the Goths in 410.

No, not these Goths . . .

General Belisarius was appointed by Justinian I to take back Rome.  He entered Italy from the east and rapidly took Sicily.

Europe was a pretty disorganized place in those days after the fall of the Roman Empire.  Here is a clever graphic depicting the changes in power.

It would not be Tuesday without a tattoo.  Here’s a Gothic one . . .

cherry month

In addition to all of the other wonderful things that we celebrate in February, it is also National Cherry Month.

Why February, when cherry season is months away?  I don’t know.

Cherries are stone fruit – like apricots, peaches, and plums.  They are members of the genus Prunus.

The English word cherry, French cerise, Spanish cereza, and Turkish kiraz all derive from the classical Greek (κέρασος) through the Latin cerasum, which referred to the ancient Greek place name Cerasus, today the city of Giresun in northern Turkey in the ancient Pontus region, from which the cherry was first exported to Europe. The ancient Greek word κερασός “cherry” itself is thought to be derived from a pre-Greek Anatolian language. – Wikipedia

The top five cherry producing nations are Turkey, United States, Iran, Italy and Spain.

This is also a good time to trot out my Chocolate, chocolate, cherry, oatmeal, cookie recipe.  Also known as the Best Cookies You Have Ever Eaten.  See the recipe at this link.

What am I knitting on tattoo Tuesday?

January 27, 2015

socks

This is a pair of socks I made using a double strand (Madelinetosh and Koigu yarns), 36 stitches on #4 needles.  The cuff was knit on #2 needles.  The furry part was knit on #4 needles.  I had the furry yarn on hand.  I cannot remember the manufacturer.  I thought these socks would be nice and warm to wear around the house – or the office instead of wearing my boots all day!

I bought the sock yarn at Bo-Peep Fine Yarns in Ligonier, PA.  This is a wonderful yarn shop!

Because it is Tuesday, here are some tattoos.  You have heard of tattoo sleeves.  It turns out there are tattoo socks, too.  These designs, however, take the name literally.

warp3

Shades of Star Trek First Contact, an Omaha man is fiddling around in his garage working on warp fields.  This story from Dave Reneke.

David Pares is maybe not how you’d imagine a scientist trying to prove the existence of warp fields (and then harness them), but he is the one who seems to be trying the hardest. Its science fiction finally coming true.

Armed with all the money and free time he possesses, Pares has been tirelessly exploring what some people have dismissed as a pointless endeavor. But a lack of funding or scientific support won’t stop him. While NASA’s Harold “Sonny” White is exploring warp bubbles in a more theoretical way, Pares is taking a more hands-on approach.

warp5Dave Pares and his workshop/laboratory

He’s toiling over a Faraday cage and constructing a V-shaped device made up of three panels with fractal arrays that he believes can compress the very fabric of space. Pares does so at the headquarters for Space Warp Dynamics, aka his garage.

warp2

Pares contends that warp bubbles occur naturally all of the time right here on earth.  Through his work he is attempted to test that theory.

warp4

That’s how the Wright Brothers did it.

And the tattoo, because it is Tuesday.

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

Boston_Tea_Party_w

Today is the anniversary of  the Boston Tea Party, which took place at Griffin’s Wharf on the evening of December 16, 1773, with the tossing of about 92,000 pounds of tea into Boston Harbor.  This was in protest to taxes imposed on tea sold in the colonies to help mediate the losses Britain suffered in the French & Indian War.  The colonists’ view was that they were being taxed unfairly because they had no representation in Parliament where these tax laws were enacted.

Boston_Tea_Party

Many of the protesters were Boston citizens of English descent, but men came from a wide area to participate in the Tea Party.  The party participants were also of Irish, Scottish, French, Portuguese and African descent and came from as far away as Maine to participate.

The backlash from the Tea Party resulted in the closing of Boston Harbor and further penalties imposed on the colonists until the loss of the tea was reimbursed.  These actions brought the colonists closer to revolution.

I thought it was interesting that, other than tea, no looting or destruction of any other property took place that night.  How times have changed.

Another thing I found interesting . . . people who were loyal to the crown found the situation in the colonies increasingly uncomfortable. Many of them fled to Canada, back to Britain, (naturally) but also went to the Bahamas and Africa where they founded Sierra Leone.  I did not know that.

pittsburgh

We are coming up on the anniversary of the founding of Pittsburgh on November 27, 1758.

I thought this from Wiki was interesting:

Pittsburgh was named in 1758 by General John Forbes in honor of British statesman William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham. Forbes was a Scotsman and it is conjectured that the pronunciation was originally intended to be /ˈpɪtsb(ə)rə/ PITS-brəor PITS-bə-rə(similar to Edinburgh). Pittsburgh was incorporated as a township in 1771 and as a borough on April 22, 1794 with the following Act: “Be it enacted by the Pennsylvania State Senate and Pennsylvania House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania…by the authority of the same, that the said town of Pittsburgh shall be…erected into a borough, which shall be called the borough of Pittsburgh for ever.”

Pittsburgh is interesting and close enough to home for a day trip.  We will be there for Thanksgiving seeing family.

sunset2

The days are getting shorter and colder, but with the change of the seasons and the end of daylight savings time, I sometimes see wonderful sunsets such as these when I am on my way home from work.

sunset1I thought the colors were amazing.

And the tattoo depicts a sunset in a different kind of location:
