What is the frequency?

November 26, 2019

In the great tradition of Mole Day and Pi Day, November 23 was Fibonacci Day.  Why?  Because the date 11/23 represents the first numbers in the sequence identified by Leonardo Fibonacci, and Italian mathematician who was born in Pisa in 1170.

The Fibonacci Sequence starts with 1 plus 1 equals 2, and goes on with each number being the sum of the two numbers directly before it: 1 plus 2 equals 3; 2 plus 3 equals 5; 3 plus 5 equals 8, and so on.

One of the beauties of the Fibonacci sequence is that the series is evident all over the natural world. Petal arrangements in flowers, the ordering of leaves in plants, the shell of the nautilus, the DNA molecule and even hurricanes show patterns that correspond to the sequence.  From time & date holidays

It is a sequence that has significance in science, mathematics and art.  In art, especially, construction of compositions based on the Fibonacci Sequence are recognized as aesthetically pleasing.

Tattoo artist Makkala Rose creates dramatic botanical designs on her clients’ skin, incorporating richly toned flower blossoms, unctuous fruits, and life-like animal portraits. One recent commission involved completely covering a client’s back with a chiaroscuro “painting” featuring three burning candles, reflective glass and crystals, piles of ripe fruit, and a hanging bat on an inky black background.

Bus-ted on tattoo Tuesday?

November 12, 2019

In the early hours of October 28, commuters witnessed an unusual sight as the rear of a Pittsburgh city bus vanished into a giant sinkhole.  There was one passenger on the bus, but no injuries.

It turns out there had been a water main leak under the street that washed out the area under the pavement.  The bus was just at the wrong place when the asphalt gave way underneath it.

The incident has led to a number of Pittsburgh wags creating bus sinkhole doughnuts, sinkhole Christmas ornaments, a bus sinkhole Halloween costume and, of course, a tattoo.

A crane was summoned and street repairs are underway.

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

Although it was first patented in 1888, and again in 1938 and 1943, the first ballpoint pens were sold in the U.S. on this date in 1945.

There was some jostling to get the first ballpoint pen to market, and the winner was the Reynolds International Pen Company.  When the pen was introduced in Gimbel Bros. in New York, TIME magazine wrote,

In Manhattan’s Gimbel Bros., Inc., thousands of people all but trampled one another last week to spend $12.50 each for a new fountain pen. The pen was made by Chicago’s Reynolds International Pen Co. In full-page ads, Gimbel’s modestly hailed it as the “fantastic, atomic era, miraculous pen.” It had a tiny ball bearing instead of a point, was guaranteed to need refilling only once every two years, would write under water (handy for mermaids), on paper, cloth, plastic or blotters.

I looked for a ballpoint pen tattoo, but only found these cousins . . .
