Photoperformances Landscapes, Cecilia Paredes

In her series ‘Landscapes’ – Peruvian artist Cecilia Paredes has mastered the art of camouflage and by using body paint is able to disappear into her surroundings. With the help of her assistants, she paints herself into the background of floral wallpapers. Her dark hair and the whites of the eyes are often the only thing that shows there’s a person hiding.

However, her series called “Landscapes” doesn’t just create a disappearance illusion, it also shows Paredes’ quest for belonging.

“The theme behind all is re-location after displacement and migration and how one has to adjust in order to belong. Tough it is, but it has to be done, without forgetting our origin. Seen in Burlington, Vermont, on the way to the ferry dock.  These are some of the flying monkeys of Burlington.

A few more:

Created by sculptor, Steve Larabee, to augment a Burlington business called the Emerald City, these iconic statues have found a home on top of the building One Main,  other flying monkey statues have been added to several other Burlington edifices over the years.

The best place to see them is on the approach to the Burlington-Port Kent ferry against the backdrop of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains.  They are a landmark I always look for when making the trip to and from Maine.

More information here at Kuriositas.

It’s Tuesday – is there a tattoo to go along with this post?  But, of course!

What am I commemorating today?

Bunker_Hill_by_Pyle

June 17, 1775 marks the battle of Bunker Hill depicted in this painting by Howard Pyle.

The battle which took place early in the American Revolution, is named for Bunker Hill which was the original objective of the battle, although most of the fighting took place on and around Breed’s Hill.

In the aftermath, it was revealed that,

The British had taken the ground but at a great loss; they had suffered 1,054 casualties (226 dead and 828 wounded), with a disproportionate number of these officers. The casualty count was the highest suffered by the British in any single encounter during the entire war. General Clinton, echoing Pyrrhus of Epirus, remarked in his diary that “A few more such victories would have shortly put an end to British dominion in America.” – ref. Wikipedia

A Pyrrhic victory, indeed.  In this battle the colonial combatants proved their ability to stand up to regular British forces.

What is watermelon Wednesday about?

June 4, 2014

My fascination with watermelon carvings remains unabated. Here are some more that I like including the obligatory baby in the watermelon suit, some interesting facts about watermelons (I did not know that!), and a handy video that shows how to make your own carvings.

Melons are all “Cucumbers” (Cucurbits or Cucurbitaceae) to the botanist, along with squash, gourds and actual cucumbers. To the agriculturist they are are all “vine crops”. All are technically “fruit” but in culinary practice all are treated as “vegetables” except the melons which are treated as fruit.

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

Science Ink / Buchbesprechung /WISSENSCHAFTI thought this was a lovely geology tattoo on a graduate student that celebrates her field of study.

I am reading a book on the geology of the Cleveland region that was published in 1940 and found in a bunch of books that were being discarded (!)

Here are a couple of the figures from that book.  I find interesting the different intersection land forms that make up this area – and the fact that I live on top of the last foothill of the Appalachian Plateau.  Interesting in history, if not in altitude.
