What am I eating?

October 21, 2013

klondike bar

We had dinner with friends on Saturday and the conversation turned, unsurprisingly, to food.  There were fried twinkies a la mode on the dessert menu.  As you can tell, this restaurant was one of those up-scale places.  We talked about the number of things that people try to fry – usually in the context of county or state fair food.  I have heard of ice cream, pickles and even beer.

Coincidentally, today I saw this story on Fair Food at Good Eats.

The photo above shows a deep fried Klondike Bar.  There are a number of other interesting concepts on the slide show at the link above.  What would you do-oo-oo to a Klondike Bar?

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

October 15, 2013

Tattoo Tuesday is about jellyfish –  because I think they pretty and interesting.  I remember gathering and studying little pink ctenophores – which are comb jellies – relatives of jellyfish, when I was in college on a biology field trip to Chesapeake Bay.  We tromped around the Bay in February, gathering specimens and studying them in the Marine Fisheries Lab nearby.  I was particularly taken with the comb jellies. Their rows of cilia undulated down their bodies, propelling them along.  Fascinating to watch.

What am I knitting?

October 10, 2013

I know, the title of this blog is Gunsmoke and KNITTING and I have not posted much on either subject lately.

This one, however, is about knitting.  I recently traveled to Pittsburgh to see my brother and other things.  My brother lives in Ligonier, PA.  Ligonier is really a charming town with a lot of little shops – including Bo Peep Fine Yarns.  I had to stop there.

So this is the sock yarn I purchased there:

And I bought this yarn because it was pretty and sparkly.  I don’t know what I am going to do with it, but would appreciate any suggestions:

We wound up the afternoon with some excellent coconut cream pie:

What am I celebrating today?

October 7, 2013

Image

Today in the year 1542, Juan Cabrillo, or more correctly, João Rodrigues Cabrilho (he was Portugese, you see), first set foot on Santa Catalina Island.  He landed at what was to become California in September of that year, making him the first European visitor to the Golden State.

I applaud his choice, we had a great time last month in California, including a stop at Point Loma where the monument to Cabrillo (Cabrilho) is located.  The monument is under the management of the National Park Service, so maybe today is not the best day to visit.

You know the water meter covers that you see on the street? My mom always told me that if you step on one you will have good luck.  However, she said, if you step on a gas meter cover, you will just get gas.

What am I wondering about?

September 16, 2013

destiny

I was driving down the road the other day and saw this sign on a truck that was next to me at the light.

It made me wonder what the truck was transporting and where it was headed.

It reminded me of a bus company that I used to see around.  Their name that was painted boldly on the side of their buses was, “Glory Train.”  That would make me stop and think before boarding.

“I’m ready when you call me, Lord, but give me just a little more time.”

What birthday am I celebrating?

September 9, 2013

STAR TREK first began its mission to explore strange new worlds, and so on . . .  on September 8, 1966.  The link is from Science.com.

This blog is Gunsmoke and KNITTING, so to celebrate the birth of Star Trek, here is a knitting project for your little Klingon.  And speaking of Klingons, did you know that Michael Dorn has a role on Castle? (If you are interested, there are a lot of links in the previous sentence.)

What was my surreal experience?

September 1, 2013

Today was a travel day for me.  I left sunny San Diego (and my Sweet Patootie) in order to get ready for work on Tuesday. The SD airport was pretty crowded. Even though we left in plenty of time for my flight, I was held up because after scanning they wanted to pat my bottom and then to sniff my fingers.

My frightfully stylish capris have embroidery on the back pockets with embellishments –  that probably prompted the patting, but I have no idea what the mechanical hand sniffer was all about.  It’s a good thing we had not been to the shooting range, I guess, because my flight was loading when I arrived at the gate.

Houston was also a busy place. However I did score a row all to myself on that connecting flight.

I got into Cleveland Hopkins about 7:30 pm. I was amazed that the place was a ghost town. All the shops and restaurants were closed and there were only three departing flights listed on the schedule board. That does not bode well for the chances of Cleveland continuing to be a hub for United.

Vacation was terrific

Here are few photos. I have more, but that will have to wait. I’m off to start the laundry.

What am I looking at today?

We are on the road – west coast this time.  This afternoon we spent some time poking around in the tide pools at Bean Hollow State Beach.  Saw crabs in many colors, large and small, limpets, hermit crabs, cormorants, grebes, etc.  It was foggy, but fun.

Look how it cleared up by the time we got to Big Sur.

This is a wonderful trip, needless to say.

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

40 Maps that will help you make sense of the world.

I don’t know if this is really a tattoo or not, but it is interesting.  Maps and charts have always fascinated me.  I was our family’s navigator when we went on trips.  I was the only one who was interested in reading a map.  I remember a trip to Pittsburgh when my father refused to ask directions, but just blithely crossed every bridge he came to.  (Have you ever been to Pittsburgh?) We never got home.

Here is a map of internet usage.  If you click on the image, it animates.  Do you see us – we’re that little twinkle right over there?
