What am I Lego loving?

April 10, 2014

lego room

“For a certain set of artists and thinkers, Legos are not mere child’s play, but objects of both abstract and formal perfection.”

When Bjarke Ingels, the visionary leader of the Danish architectural firm BIG, first heard about the competition to build the Lego House, a museum and activity center near the toy company’s headquarters in Billund, Denmark, he gathered his staff. “If there was one building that BIG was founded to build,” Ingels announced, “this is it.”

For Ingels, Lego proportions have a mystical perfection that “borders on the Da Vinci code.” Like most enthusiasts, Ingels refers to them as “bricks,” not “Legos”; he doesn’t see them as toys, but as tools for “systematic creativity.'”

Some LEGO history:

“When Ole Kirk Kristiansen founded Lego in 1932, the company made wooden toys, but after World War II, it switched to plastic. The Lego brick as we know it today was developed in the mid-1950s. From the start, it was a feat of classic Scandinavian design: clean, practical, reliable and somewhat revolutionary with its “clutch power,” which made it easy to snap and unsnap. Today, Lego enthusiasts marvel that those first Legos still fit perfectly with the current ones, and that six identical eight-studded bricks can be combined in more than 900 million ways. “The human condition is, sadly, divisive,” the British television host James May said on an episode of his show “Toy Stories,” on which he explored a full-size house he built entirely out of Lego bricks. “But there are simple spiritual experiences that unite all of humanity in unqualified communal joy: sex, the dance, foot massage — and to those I would add the simple sensation of pressing Lego bricks together.””lego 4

This article is from the New York Times; it goes on to talk more about artists who are attracted to and who use LEGOs in their work.

I don’t think I posted this video of James May’s Toy Story that shows how a battalion of volunteers built him a LEGO house.  Here is a short clip of the results.

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

March 4, 2014

mg5It is Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras!

I suspect that this is another one of those holidays that has been taken over by the church and yet predates Christianity.  If you know its earlier origins, please let me know.

MG4This is a pancake race in Great Britain.

Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. The liturgical fasting emphasized eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure: in many cultures, this means no meat, dairy products, or eggs.

In Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand the day is also known as “Pancake Day” as it is a common custom to eat pancakes as a meal.

In Newfoundland small tokens are frequently cooked in the pancakes. Children take delight in discovering the objects, which are intended to be divinatory. For example, the person who receives a coin will be wealthy; a nail that they will become or marry a carpenter.

And, of course, there are tattoos:

Celebrate the day with pancakes, jambalaya, a slice of King cake, and a hurricane!

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

February 18, 2014

On February 18, 1930, Clyde W. Tombaugh, an assistant at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, discovered Pluto. For over seven decades, Pluto was considered the ninth planet of our solar system.

Now we know that is not the case.

This video was made by C G P Grey.

Pluto may not be a planet (one less object to memorize in elementary science class!), but it is the basis for some interesting tattoos:

The “Sherlock” collection design was created as part of the Lego CUUSOO project, which allows fans to share concepts in the hopes of getting official Lego approval. “Sherlock,” submitted by a user called Flailx, is one of six Lego Review qualifiers for the Winter 2014 slot. Having received support from more than 10,000 Lego fans, the “Sherlock” project is now being reviewed by the company’s designers and product managers.

Thank you, Robb for the link and the continuing cultural enlightenment.

Today is National Kazoo Day, but believe it or not, I could not find a photo of a kazoo tattoo.  So here are some hummingbirds.

nautilus 4

Here is the Nautilus approaching New York

The USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, was launched today in 1954.  This occurred in the midst of the Cold War and advances by Soviet scientists into the space race.  Nautilus was the first vessel to reach and cross the north pole while submerged – which brought Russia much closer to the reach of this new nuclear Navy.

USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine. She was the first vessel to complete a submerged transit to the North Pole on 3 August 1958. Sharing names with the submarine in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and named after another USS Nautilus (SS-168) that served with distinction in World War II, Nautilus was authorized in 1951 and launched in 1954. Because her nuclear propulsion allowed her to remain submerged far longer than diesel-electric submarines, she broke many records in her first years of operation, and traveled to locations previously beyond the limits of submarines. In operation, she revealed a number of limitations in her design and construction. This information was used to improve subsequent submarines. (Wikipedia)

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

January 14, 2014

top hat one

In addition to tattoo Tuesday, it is also Top Hat Day.  Here is a little history from Wikipedia:

According to fashion historians, the top hat may have descended directly from the sugarloaf hat; otherwise it is difficult to establish provenance for its creation. Gentlemen began to replace the tricorne with the top hat at the end of the 18th century; a painting by Charles Vernet of 1796, Un Incroyable, shows a French dandy (one of the Incroyables et Merveilleuses) with such a hat. The first silk top hat in England is credited to George Dunnage, a hatter from Middlesex, in 1793.[5] The invention of the top hat is often erroneously credited to a haberdasher named John Hetherington.

There is are a lot of other interesting “facts” onWiki.

Also, here is a nod to the 1935 Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers film, Top Hat.
