What is tattoo Tuesday about?

perseus3

Perseus was the first Greek superhero. He defeated the Gorgon, Medusa, by means of a mirror and sleight of hand, saved Andromeda from Cetus the sea monster, and founded Mycenae, one of the centers of Greek civilization.

perseus2

Perseus’s fame is secured by his placement as a constellation in the summer sky (northern hemisphere). Dust particles from the comet Swift-Tuttle remind us of Perseus every summer (since 36 A.D. by Chinese records) with the Perseid meteor shower, which is due to peak today.

perseus 1And he is memorialized in tattoos.

bara2 as salome

Theda Bara was an American silent film and stage actress. Bara was one of the most popular actresses of the silent era, and one of cinema’s earliest sex symbols. Her femme fatale roles earned her the nickname The Vamp. – Wikipedia

bara 3

Theda Bara’s persona was an early Hollywood creation.  Fox studios made up a history of her parents and upbringing.  The photos of her remind me of a Gibson Girl gone Goth and, in spite of the erotic and just plain weird costumes, there is a certain innocence about her. She probably spent a fortune on eye makeup, though.  She was born Theodosia Burr Goodman on July 29, 1885 in Cincinnati, Ohio, of all places.

Since it is tattoo Tuesday, here is one honoring Theda Bara.

What am I having nightmares about?

This NYT story:

California: Giant Snails Seized at Airport

Customs inspectors at Los Angeles International Airport seized 67 live giant African snails, considered a delicacy in Nigeria but also voracious pests that can eat paint and stucco off houses, officials said Monday. Weighing nearly two pounds each, including their shells, and measuring about six inches in length, the snails arrived from Lagos, Nigeria, in two plastic baskets with paperwork describing them as being for human consumption, Customs and Border Protection said. They were destined for an address in San Dimas, an agency spokeswoman said. According to Customs and Border Protection, the snails can consume more than 500 types of plants and will even feast on the exterior of homes if fruits or vegetables are not available. They also can carry parasites harmful to humans, including one that can lead to meningitis.

So, so glad they did not include a photo with the story – ewch

But this is tattoo Tuesday, so here –

What am I watching?

Seen in Burlington, Vermont, on the way to the ferry dock.  These are some of the flying monkeys of Burlington.

A few more:

Created by sculptor, Steve Larabee, to augment a Burlington business called the Emerald City, these iconic statues have found a home on top of the building One Main,  other flying monkey statues have been added to several other Burlington edifices over the years.

The best place to see them is on the approach to the Burlington-Port Kent ferry against the backdrop of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains.  They are a landmark I always look for when making the trip to and from Maine.

More information here at Kuriositas.

It’s Tuesday – is there a tattoo to go along with this post?  But, of course!

What am I commemorating today?

Bunker_Hill_by_Pyle

June 17, 1775 marks the battle of Bunker Hill depicted in this painting by Howard Pyle.

The battle which took place early in the American Revolution, is named for Bunker Hill which was the original objective of the battle, although most of the fighting took place on and around Breed’s Hill.

In the aftermath, it was revealed that,

The British had taken the ground but at a great loss; they had suffered 1,054 casualties (226 dead and 828 wounded), with a disproportionate number of these officers. The casualty count was the highest suffered by the British in any single encounter during the entire war. General Clinton, echoing Pyrrhus of Epirus, remarked in his diary that “A few more such victories would have shortly put an end to British dominion in America.” – ref. Wikipedia

A Pyrrhic victory, indeed.  In this battle the colonial combatants proved their ability to stand up to regular British forces.

Science Ink / Buchbesprechung /WISSENSCHAFTI thought this was a lovely geology tattoo on a graduate student that celebrates her field of study.

I am reading a book on the geology of the Cleveland region that was published in 1940 and found in a bunch of books that were being discarded (!)

Here are a couple of the figures from that book.  I find interesting the different intersection land forms that make up this area – and the fact that I live on top of the last foothill of the Appalachian Plateau.  Interesting in history, if not in altitude.

Movie star, romantic icon, the “thirty-five million dollar steel harp,” all refer to the Golden Gate Bridge, opened this day in 1937.  Here is some trivia about the bridge.

And here are the tattoos:

What am I celebrating on tattoo Tuesday?

May 20, 2014

root beer book

Today is Root Beer day.  On this day in 1876 Charles Hines introduced commercially bottled root beer to the public in celebration of the centennial of the USA in Philadelphia.

Root Beer with Sam

Here are some bottles from my root beer cellar being watched over by Cmdr. Sam Vimes.

Root beer, of course, had been around for a long time.  It is one of those homemade concoctions like birch beer, ginger beer, spruce beer, and sarsaparilla, that has many different recipes.  Some of the ingredients in root beer (from Wikipedia) include:

Main ingredients

Foam

Spices

Other ingredients

I bet you thought I forgot the tattoo.  Nope – here it is:

hawk4

This morning when I was on my way to work a fellow just like this one flew at eye level right in front of my car.  I am very grateful that his timing was such that there was no collision.  Even though I work in an urban area, there are enough trees, parks and connected green space that red tailed hawks can survive.  I once saw one take down a pigeon right in front of our concert hall – pretty impressive.

Red tails are frequently seen in North America, according to the Bird Lab at Cornell University.  Go to this site for more information, range map, identification tips and habits.

And you can be a hawk voyeur by clicking on this link which has a web cam.

Hawk tattoos range from realistic to symbolic and tribal in nature.
