May 26, 1912 is the birthday of Jay Silverheels, most widely known for his role as Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s faithful Indian companion. Born Harry J. Smith in Brantford, Ontario, Silverheels has over 100 films to his credit.

We celebrate those who go down to the sea in ships on National Maritime Day.
National Maritime Day is a United States holiday created to recognize the maritime industry. It is observed on May 22, the date that the American steamship Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia on the first ever transoceanic voyage under steam power. It is a time to observe its maritime heritage, to honor those who served as merchant mariners, and to recognize the benefits of the maritime industry.
The contributions made by the US merchant marine ships and men are important throughout our history, but became particularly crucial during World War II, bringing supplies to our allies and playing an important role in bringing troops home. Here is a short history of this day of observance.

Today is Root Beer day. On this day in 1876 Charles Hines introduced commercially bottled root beer to the public in celebration of the centennial of the USA in Philadelphia.

Root beer, of course, had been around for a long time. It is one of those homemade concoctions like birch beer, ginger beer, spruce beer, and sarsaparilla, that has many different recipes. Some of the ingredients in root beer (from Wikipedia) include:

They are both Maine Coon cats and are still growing. Sammy is 2 years old and Hobbes is only 9 months old. They are terrific companions for each other and are great fun to watch.

Maine Coons are the second largest breed of domestic cat. Males weigh from 15 to 25 lb (6.8 to 11.3 kg) with females weighing from 10 to 15 lb (4.5 to 6.8 kg). The height of adults can vary between 10 and 16 in (25 and 41 cm) and they can reach a length of up to 48 in (120 cm), including the tail, which can reach a length of 14 in (36 cm)and is long, tapering, and heavily furred, almost resembling a raccoon’s tail.
