What am I knitting?

November 11, 2015

anatomy-1

Vermont-based knitter Emily Stoneking runs an anatomical knitting brand called aKNITomy where she transforms fluffy skeins of yarn into the anatomical details of rats, frogs, people, and other creatures. Stoneking—who is admittedly not a scientist—likes to approximate the form and style seen in most anatomical illustrations with clear colors and distinct forms that may not be 100% accurate but are fun to look at nonetheless.

The specimens are available as both completed pieces and downloadable patterns, so you can ditch the formaldehyde and get a PDF knitting guide.

What am I recommending?

November 10, 2015

This is a place we liked – huge red enameled oven imported from Italy; so screaming hot that your pizza cooks in 90 seconds.  Tasty, too. If you are in the area, they deserve a look – reblogged from HMS Defiant . . .

PIZZA AND AMMO

We got an announcement today from a pizza place we ate at on our drive back home from San Diego. It was the first I received from them in almost a year. They’re not exactly beating the drum. It was though, excellent wood fired pizza and the atmosphere was friendly and inviting so we recommend it.

The place is also across the street from a Walmart that seemed to contain all the guns and ammo in Christendom. That may be no big draw for some, but living here in MetroParkCentralis and coming from San Diego, guns were scarce and ammo was even more conspicuously not available at either end. If I hadn’t loaded up with ammo at the Post Exchange at Fort Riley that morning, I’d have squeezed in some more .45 ammo.

Where am I taking my auto repair work?

November 4, 2015

02TheAnatomyLessonThe Anatomy Lesson

Chicago-based photographer Freddy Fabris has worked for years on commercial projets for clients like Leo Burnett, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Ogilvy & Mather, but it was a recent decision to focus on a personal project exploded into a bevy of awards and accolades. Fabris, who has a background in painting, had long been ruminating about how to pay tribute to the works of classic painters like Rembrandt and Da Vinci using his camera. While accompanying a friend to a cluttered auto repair shop, inspiration suddenly struck. Fabris would pose the mechanics in the style of classical portraits, and in tableaus reminiscent of Philippe de Champaigne’s The Last Supper and Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam. As he shared the idea with colleagues and collaborators, everyone quickly jumped on board and the Renaissance series was born.

Who am I calling today?

October 29, 2015

I am calling Uber.  They will deliver kittens to you because it is National Cat Day.

uber cats

National Cat Day is Thursday, October 29 — it always sneaks up on us! — and Uber will be offering on-demand kitten delivery to offices in 50 US cities.

Kittens can be requested between 11 AM and 3 PM [today] using your Uber app — they’ll send a reminder you if you need one — and for just $30, you can have 15 minutes of cuddling with highly adoptable kittens.

Says Uber:

It’s just a $30 “snuggle fee” for the best 15 minutes of your day and we will turn around and support the participating shelters! If you’re smitten for a kitten or are looking for a new purr-sonal assistant just ask the local shelter representative assisting with your kitten delivery. We’ve helped over 30 kittens find their forever homes through UberKITTENS and this year, we hope to find every eligible kitten a home! …If you’re lucky enough to request kittens to your office, please make sure your boss or building is going to be cool with the meows and that no one in the area is allergic. Also, having a dedicated room for kitten playtime is preferred.

While there’s no word yet if your kitten delivery will come with an in-car dance party, cats are probably more than enough distraction for a single day. The move is a clear indication on Uber’s part that the company is ready to start rebuilding goodwill after a seemingly endless parade of negative press. Kittens are nice but we’re raising our eyebrows higher than this concerned cat if Uber thinks it can just throw animals at a problem to make it go away.

But, did we mention… cat delivery? Sneak onto your office manager’s phone or better yet just order them yourself. Where did all these cats come from?

Who knows. Not you, you had nothing to do with all the cats at the office…

Whose birthday am I celebrating on tattoo Tuesday?

October 27, 2015

Captain James Cook, explorer, was born on October 27, 1728, in a small village near Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. His discoveries included the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii).  He famously vowed, “to sail ‘as far as I think it possible for man to go.'”

On his third trip to Hawaii he was killed in an argument with the native people.  And that was about as far as he could go.
