fox cat

This story appeared in the Daily Mail about an intrepid Norwegian Forest Cat defending his yard from this red fox.  The fox appears not to be taking any chances.  There’s more to the story here.

My Sammy (Cmdr. Samuel Vimes) is a Maine Coon and he has a more outgoing personality.  I found in once him in the backyard trying to play with an opossum.  Not smart – no damage, however.  For this reason (and others), Sammy now dominates the house, but not the yard or the neighborhood.

Bonus Sappy Cat -Jill appears to know that her owner is going away for the weekend – and has plans to tag along.

What is that between my toes?

October 2, 2013

Sand between my toes because this weekend, on a warm, late September day, we went to the beach! (This is unusual for Ohio.)

What am I sappy cat blogging, part II

September 27, 2013

Amazing and beautiful photographs of the Cat’s Paw nebula in the constellation Scorpius taken by the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope in Chile.

The story, from Bad Astronomy on Slate, explains that the flame-like filaments of star-forming materials are actually, in this case, mind-bogglingly cold, at around minus 445 degrees Farhenheit.

koko_kitten_1985Koko and her kitten

Koko is the gorilla who was taught American Sign Language by researcher Dr. Penny Patterson.  Koko is particularly fond of kittens. The connection is another gorilla story.  Glenn Cravath (American artist 1897-1964) was born this day.  He is the artist for the book cover for King Kong, published in 1932, and for comic strip style advertisements for the movie based on the book.  The film was released in 1933 with Fay Wray playing the hapless bride.  A remake was done in 2005, starring Naomi Watts as the female lead and Jack Black as King Kong (no, that’s not right.)

I know this is not anything to do with sappy cats, but I thought it was interesting.  I found it on Why? Because Science.

This is sappy cat blogging:

What am I looking at today?

We are on the road – west coast this time.  This afternoon we spent some time poking around in the tide pools at Bean Hollow State Beach.  Saw crabs in many colors, large and small, limpets, hermit crabs, cormorants, grebes, etc.  It was foggy, but fun.

Look how it cleared up by the time we got to Big Sur.

This is a wonderful trip, needless to say.

How am I seeing?

August 19, 2013

RTEmagicC_scoring_munsell.gif

I saw this story from the New York Times on glasses that can correct some kinds of color blindness and I thought that was interesting.

It made me think about how different perceptions can be for different people.  I used to drive myself crazy when I was a kid wondering about that.  Were there some people for whom chocolate tasted terrible and liver tasted good, and what do dogs actually see, what about bees that can see ultraviolet?

I would have like to be able to see beyond the visual spectrum and wondered what it would look like if there were more colors.  I was sure that there were, if only I could see them.

Here are some ultraviolet flowers.

And you can test yourself here with the farnsworth-munsell color vision test.

The image above is from the Ishihara color vision test.  You can take that online, too.

If you were color blind would you buy the glasses?  I would think seriously about it.

For Sappy Car blogging this week, I offer this story run on NPR in April about cats and the poets who love them.

Reference: Word Tapestry, with thanks.

Sappy cat bonus, Commander Samuel Vimes in repose.

When I sit in the chair of the person he obviously loves best, Sam boxes me about the ears with both front paws and tries to eat my hair.  Just last night, in fact.
