What is tattoo Tuesday about?

August 2, 2016

“Inspired by the botanical specimens she finds while walking through parks and gardens on her frequent travels, tattoo artist Pis Saro creates elegant plant portraits on the legs, arms, and spines of her international clients. Designed directly from nature, Saro’s works are nearly indistinguishable from the plants she sketches, often holding each side-by-side in the beautifully composed images she shares frequently on Instagram.”

What am I sappy cat blogging?

“They say cats have 9 lives. Well Internet cats now have 1 additional life, thanks to embroidery artist Hiroko Kubota. The Nara-based artist began creating clothes as a hobby, mainly for her family. “My son was of a smaller build and store-bought clothes wouldn’t fit him well so I would often make him clothes,” explains Kubota. “It was actually at his request that I began embroidering cats.”

As it turns out, Kubota’s son is somewhat of a cat fanatic and enjoys collecting images of cute cats he finds on the Internet. His favorite ones would become models for embroideries.

After posting her creations online they quickly went viral (like most Internet cats do), prompting Kubota to open an etsy shop 6 months ago. Despite the hefty price tag for a shirt ($250 – $300) she quickly racked up 15 sales and her current inventory is looking a bit slim. According to her website she also used to do custom orders. But now that she seems to be getting busier that service may be in jeopardy.

Update: Kubota has released a book about her hand-embroidered cats called neko shirt.”

porcelain-6

Jessica Harrison has taken porcelain figurines of women in flowing dresses – such as you would find in your grandmother’s curio cabinet – and added sailors’ tattoos in an interesting juxtaposition of culture and symbolism.

The artist’s statement:

“Harrison proposes a multi-directional and pervasive model of skin as a space in which body and world mingle. Working with this moving space between artist/maker and viewer, she draws on the active body in both making and interpreting sculpture to unravel imaginative touch and proprioceptive sensation in sculptural practice. In this way, Harrison re-describes the body in sculpture through the skin, offering an alternative way of thinking about the body beyond a binary tradition of inside and outside.”

The real castle above and the Lego-wonder:

The creator says no fasteners or adhesives were used – only Legos.

I am amazed.

P.S. I know this is crochet, not knitting.

How am I finding my way?

May 25, 2016

I have posted about interesting manhole covers before and I am always on the lookout for them. Here is another brilliant one from Seattle.
manhole seattle“For several years, whenever I traveled to Seattle, one of the joys of touring the city was the unique way-finding system within, or rather on top of, the manhole covers around the city. The map, designed by Anne Knight in 1977, has a “you are here” polished bead indicating where you are on the relief map of the city. In addition, key landmarks of Seattle are also indicated on the map. An interesting, functional system for a great walking city. One of its flaws is that it has no compass rose for orientation.” Kit Hinrichs at Create

Socks!

With the cuff, heel flap and turn, gusset, foot and toe defined by different colors – harmonizing, but not matching. I had to snatch them off his feet to get a picture.

What am I “watching?”

I love it – a Rube Goldberg device made of watch parts – view all the way to the end for the out-takes.

How am I moving?

I thought these videos were fascinating.  And I look just like that when I am doing tai chi – you know, the flow-y movements.  Yeah.

wasp-4

“It’s unnerving to discover a wasp’s nest dangling outside your house, but perhaps it would be a tad less so with the help of biology student Mattia Menchetti who cleverly realized he could give colored construction paper to a colony of European paper wasps. By gradually providing different paper shades, the wasps turned their homes into a functional rainbow of different colors. This isn’t the first time scientists have encountered insects producing colorful materials with the aid of artificial coloring. In 2012, residue from an M&M plant caused local bees to make blue and green honey.”
