Whose birthday do I note today?

November 26, 2014

bat_masterson

Bat (Bartholomew) Masterson, born November 26, 1853 in Henryville, Quebec.

In 1873, Masterson left home and began working as a buffalo hunter and Indian scout in Dodge City, Kansas. Over the next decade, he worked intermittently as the Ford County sheriff (1877-79) and a deputy U.S. marshal (1879), but largely made his living as a saloonkeeper and gambler.

Masterson spent his later years in New York City. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him deputy U.S. marshal for the southern district of New York, a position that Masterson held until 1907. His enthusiasm for boxing and other sports led him to become a feature writer for Human Life Magazine, a sports writer, and eventually the sports editor of the New York Morning Telegraph Biography.com

The story of Bat’s last shootout, before he turned to law enforcement, is chronicled here.

Generally thought of as an icon of the Old West, Masterson died in 1921.  He suffered a heart attack at his desk in New York City where he was working as a journalist.

colonel_sanders_KFC

Harland David Sanders, born September 9, 1890, in Henryville, Indiana.

Colonel Sanders was an American businessman, best known for founding Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), and later acting as the company’s goodwill ambassador and symbol.

Sanders held a number of jobs in his early life, such as a fireman, insurance salesman and running filling stations. He began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. Sanders identified the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first KFC franchise opened in Utah in 1952. The company’s rapid expansion across the United States and overseas saw it overwhelm him however, and in 1964 he sold the company to a group of investors led by John Y. Brown, Jr. and Jack C. Massey for $2 million.

liliuokalani

Queen Liliuokalani, the last monarch of Hawaii was born on September 2, 1838.

Unfortunately, her reign was not a happy one:

The Queen was deposed on January 17, 1893, and temporarily relinquished her throne to “the superior military forces of the United States.”

bara2 as salome

Theda Bara was an American silent film and stage actress. Bara was one of the most popular actresses of the silent era, and one of cinema’s earliest sex symbols. Her femme fatale roles earned her the nickname The Vamp. – Wikipedia

bara 3

Theda Bara’s persona was an early Hollywood creation.  Fox studios made up a history of her parents and upbringing.  The photos of her remind me of a Gibson Girl gone Goth and, in spite of the erotic and just plain weird costumes, there is a certain innocence about her. She probably spent a fortune on eye makeup, though.  She was born Theodosia Burr Goodman on July 29, 1885 in Cincinnati, Ohio, of all places.

western reserve 4Cleveland and its three tall(ish) buildings

Cleveland obtained its name on July 22, 1796 when surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company laid out Connecticut’s Western Reserve into townships and a capital city they named “Cleaveland” after their leader, General Moses Cleaveland. Cleaveland oversaw the plan for what would become the modern downtown area, centered on Public Square, before returning home, never again to visit Ohio. The first settler in Cleaveland was Lorenzo Carter, who built a cabin on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. The Village of Cleaveland was incorporated on December 23, 1814. In spite of the nearby swampy lowlands and harsh winters, its waterfront location proved to be an advantage. The area began rapid growth after the 1832 completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal. This key link between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes connected the city to the Atlantic Ocean via the Erie Canal and later via the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River. Growth continued with added railroad links.Cleveland incorporated as a city in 1836.  More here.

The Connecticut Western Reserve was an area in the Northwest Territory held, sold and distributed by the State of Connecticut in the years after the American Revolution.

Connecticut was one of several states that had land claims in the Ohio Country going back to the colonial period. Connecticut gave up most of its claims to the federal government so that the Northwest Territory could be created. However, it reserved the northeast corner of the territory for itself. This area came to be known as the Connecticut Western Reserve.  More here.

What am I celebrating today?

Today is the 50th birthday of Pop-Tarts.

A little history from Wikipedia:

Originally not frosted when first introduced in 1964, it was later determined that frosting could withstand the toaster, and the first frosted Pop-Tarts were officially released in 1967. The first Pop-Tarts came out in four different flavors: strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple currant.  Today, there is a wide variety of Pop-Tart flavors, including chocolate chip, s’mores, raspberry, and French toast.

In 1992, Thomas Nangle sued Kellogg for damages after his Pop-Tart got stuck and caught fire in his toaster. The case gained wider notoriety when humor columnist Dave Barry wrote a column about starting a fire in his own toaster with Pop-Tarts. In 1994, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi professor Patrick Michaud performed an experiment showing that, when left in the toaster too long, strawberry Pop-Tarts could produce flames over a foot high.  The discovery triggered a flurry of lawsuits. Since then, Pop-Tarts carry the warning: “Due to possible risk of fire, never leave your toasting appliance or microwave unattended.”

Another note of CAUTION – please tell your kids not to nibble their Pop-Tarts into the shape of a gun if they are eating them in school.  Zero Tolerance.  Some other shapes to be avoided are:

Whose birthday am I celebrating?

On March 22, 2228, James Tiberius Kirk will be born in Riverside, Iowa.  This is a town that takes its future seriously.  There is a plaque in town to pre-commemorate the event and a starship graces the town square.

What is tattoo Tuesday about?

February 25, 2014

homer6

February 24 was Winslow Homer’s 178th birthday.  Homer is probably best known for his seascapes, but he started his career as a print maker.  In 1861, he was sent to the front as an artist-correspondent recording the battles and conditions of the American Civil War.

He lived a good part of his life in New York City employed as a magazine illustrator, but his travels to the east coast of New England, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and eventually to Europe – Paris and the English seaside, influenced his work.  He has been described as foreshadowing the abstract movement, but I think his work is most characterized by his mastery of air, water and weather.

A longer biography can be found here.

Homer eventually settled in Prouts Neck, Maine.  Some of his most famous paintings come from his life and work in that area.  Interestingly, his studio still exists and it has recently been restored:

On September 25, 2012 the Portland Museum of Art opened the Winslow Homer Studio to the public for the first time. One of the most significant locations in the history of American art, the Studio, located at Prouts Neck, Maine, is where the great American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910) lived and painted many of his masterpieces from 1883 until his death.

It is tattoo Tuesday, but I thought that finding a tattoo related to Winslow Homer was a long-shot, but I was wrong:

Whose birthday is it today?

October 3, 2013

Whose birthday?  It is mine.

archie's cake

When I was growing up, birthdays always meant a cake from Hough Bakery.   For my brother, born in March, the cake was covered in spring flowers.  For my sister’s June birthday, frosting roses decorated the cake.  I think I really got the best deal because for my October birthday, my mom would get a cake with the entire top covered in frosting mums in autumn colors.  I cannot describe how beautiful it was – and how delicious.

petit fours

Hough closed their retail stores in 1992.  You can tell a native Clevelander by the dreamy, far away look in their eyes when you mention the name Hough Bakery.  They will sigh, “Oh, yes, I remember the  . . .  “(filling in the blank – birthday cakes, corn toasties, brownies, blondies, hot cross buns, daffodil cakes, Hungarian delights, etc., etc., with whatever was their favorite.

If you did not grow up on bakery from Hough’s, the names will mean nothing to you.  But to a native Clevelander, Hough’s was more than just a bakery, it was part of our history.

The daffodil cakes and so forth may be gone, but you can still get a Hough-style birthday cake at Archie’s Bakery.  Archie was a baker for Hough’s and he negotiated with the family to continue baking and selling their distinctive birthday cakes.
