You can always get to me with a marble raceway.  This is from Scott Weaver:

What did I change my mind about?

August 30, 2012

Or, if you prefer, about what did I change my mind?  I was revving up to do a language usage rant on pet peeves, when I came upon this video of Stephen Fry on language.  Stephen is always fun and the graphics in this video are brilliant.

Thanks to  Just English for this reference, and regarding my rant – never mind.

Whose birthday am I celebrating today?

August 22, 2012

“Brevity is the soul of lingerie.”

“Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves.”

“This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.”

Upon being informed of Calvin Coolidge’s death, she replied, “How could they tell?”

And, of course, “One more drink and I’ll be under the host.”

Dorothy Parker, of course, born August 22, 1893.  Poet, writer, playwright and founding member of the Algonquin Round Table.  When the Round Table broke up, she went to Hollywood and was a two-time Oscar nominated screen-writer. She was active there until black-listed by the McCarthyism.  She remained politically active throughout her life.  Parker downplayed her skills, but was well known and appreciated for her bright wit and scathing humor.

Founding members of the Algonquin Round Table:  (l-r) Art Samuels, Charlie MacArthur, Harpo Marx, Dorothy Parker and Alexander Woollcott.  What a wonderful experience it must have been to experience lunch at the Algonquin Round Table during that time and with those characters.

Whose birthday am I celebrating today?

July 29, 2012

Silent screen star, Theda Bara.  Born Theodosia Burr Goodman in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 29, 1885. She grew up in that city and attended the University of Cincinnati for two years before traveling west.  She was one of Hollywood’s first sex symbols.  Here is a lovely tribute to this star that shows some of her exotic costumes, which contributed to her reputation as a femme fatale.  I wish I has the chutzpah to wear snakes like that.

Whose birthday am I celebrating today?

May 26, 2012

jay-silverheels2May 26, 1912 is the birthday of Jay Silverheels, most widely known for his role as Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s faithful Indian companion. Born Harry J. Smith in Brantford, Ontario, Silverheels has over 100 films to his credit.

There is a nice tribute here,

and his IMDB bi0graphy.

What would the Lone Ranger have done without him?  What would he have done without the Lone Ranger?  Well, there is always Lyle Lovett’s tune.

For whose closeup am I ready?

Happy Birthday to Gloria Swanson, born March 27, 1897

Swanson was a prominent silent film actress.  Unfortunately, many of her films, including those which received the greatest critical acclaim, have not survived.  Later in her career, she became known for her portrayal of Nora Desmond, a caricature of an aging silent film star, in Sunset Boulevard.

What am I Sappy Cat Blogging this week?

March 23, 2012

Thanks to David for this referral:

This is a video of a homeless man in Santa Barbara and his pets. They work State Street every week for donations. The animals are pretty well fed and are mellow. They are a family. The man who owns them rigged up a harness for his cat so she wouldn’t have to walk so much (like the dog and himself). At some juncture the rat came along, and as no one wanted to eat anyone else, the rat started riding with the cat and, often, on the cat! The dog will stand all day and let you talk to him and admire him for a few chin scratches.
The Mayor of Santa Barbara filmed this clip and sent it out as a holiday card.

Happy Birthday to Chico Marx.

Born in 1887 in New York City, Chico (Leonard) was the eldest of the Marx brothers.  He affected an Italian accent (among others) and was the piano player of the group.
