February 15, 2012Another challenge for Mike Rowe? Reported on the Live Science website, scientists are contending that the right whales in the Bay of Fundy are stressed by the noise from freighters and it is interfering with their mating behavior.
They way the researchers determine that freighter noise is a problem is by sampling the stress hormone levels in the whales’ poop. I like the Bay of Fundy, gotta love the whales, but still this is right up there with jobs I don’t want. And, besides, how would one go about it?
What am I peeling?
February 13, 2012Answer: Clementines. According to Produce Pete, these are the smallest of the mandarin oranges and are imported from places such as Morocco and Spain.
Not only are they delicious, they also are the inspiration for an art project. In the galleries below, there are nine examples (front and back) of clementine peels manipulated into a variety of shapes. The two rules for creating these objects are: 1. use only fingers to peel the clementine, and 2. extract the fruit keeping the peel and the fruit in one intact piece.
Reading from left to right, top to bottom, these are titled: sphere, pinwheel, orchid, dancing zombie, road kill, salamander, orchid 2, snowflake and bunny. Or you can make up your own titles for them.

February 6 – Happy Waitangi Day. This is the day that commemorates the founding of New Zealand with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Since the treaty dealt with Maori land rights it is not surprising there was some controversy, for many years, over what the treaty really guaranteed.
These days, however, many of the activities of the day celebrate Maori culture.

There was not a full moon (I checked) and I do not know how the planets were aligned, but this was a challenging week on many fronts.
Thanks to a good friend, last night I was drinking an enormous Manhattan, some good wine, and sharing a sumptuous meal featuring boneless pork ribs with onions, garlic, fresh rosemary and heavy cream. This is a dish I will add to my list of treasures. I did not take a picture, but I will next time.
Of course, we could have been eating baloney sandwiches and beer. It was the conversation with someone I trust that made all the difference.

Cleveland’s West Side Market. They say it is the oldest operating indoor-outdoor market in the city. It has been in operation on Cleveland’s near west side since 1840. The market is distinguished by its neoclassical-byzantine architecture, punctuated by a tall clock tower and graced with a domed hall housing the vendors stalls. The building was designed by Hubbell and Benes and is on the register of historic places.
The market has been in the news lately because of some proposals to change the way it operates. Currently the market is open four days a week – Monday and Wednesday, 7 am to 4 pm; Friday and Saturday, 7 am to 6 pm. Some people, city government, I think, want to make the hours conform more to the shopping hours of a traditional supermarket. The West Side Market is not a traditional supermarket and, as one of the vendors was quoted on the radio, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Shopping at the market is always an adventure. My first trip is full sensory overload, but after a few trips I found my favorite stands and vendors.

Who am I feeding?
February 2, 2012No Gunsmoke – some Knitting. Attended the arrival of Carmen, a new suri llama at RHL Farms last Sunday. As I understand it, the llamas guard the alpacas and alpacas are what RHL is all about. Carmen was introduced to Bella, the other llama who guards the girls, and to the rest of the female alpacas. Everything went smoothly. At this point the sun was shining, but the day was cold. Actually, perfect weather for the alpacas and llamas and their thick, soft coats.
There are lots of male alpacas (and llamas), too, but I just have photos of the girls.
I did acquire some yarn. I love that the skeins are labeled with the name of the animal from which it came. So I have a skein of yarn from Pinky (creamy white) and one from Black Diamond (dark brown black). I am working on mittens – with the yarns mixed. Later, I may knit some in a single color, or in some other combination. I will probably post the mitten pictures when they are completed.

January 26, 2012Was home today and decided to take down the ugly cat tree, which none of the cats would even look at let along climb on. As soon as I got out the tools and started on the job, the cat tree became IRRESISTIBLE to Noodle. See her “helping” me.
