Whose birthday am I celebrating on tattoo Tuesday?
September 2, 2014Queen Liliuokalani, the last monarch of Hawaii was born on September 2, 1838.
Unfortunately, her reign was not a happy one:
The Queen was deposed on January 17, 1893, and temporarily relinquished her throne to “the superior military forces of the United States.”

In grammar school, we were taught Aloha oe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloha_%CA%BBOe). Odds are very good that my Pennsylvanian teacher didn’t really know how to pronounce it correctly, judging from the bad cowboy imitation from “Goodbye Old Paint” that we were told to use. (We were learning States songs that year.) Aloha ‘oe is a beautiful song, anyway.
Would love the hear that bad cowboy imitation!
