What am I Sappy Cat Blogging?

Seen on PopSci, the robot cheetah, developed by Boston Dynamics, set a new land speed record of 28.3 miles per hour –

The article also says that while the Cheetah runs tethered to an external power supply, they are about to launch the Wildcat which needs no external support.  I have included the photos of the real cheetahs because this is Sappy Cat Blogging.

A little art history this week featuring:

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty, and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that “Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau.”

In addition to feminine beauty and sensuality, he was also frequently painted cats.

From the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC, again, click here to see the Asian fishing kittens which were recently born.  Unfortunately these lovely animals are endangered due to habitat destruction.

Bonus Sappy Cat photo:

This is Maine Coon kittie, Sam Vimes lounging in the breakfast nook.  (My cats never climb on the furniture.)

Manul – the Cat that Time Forgot – or the Pallas Cat.

Described as one of the first of two species of modern cat to emerge.  The Pallas cat has remained unchanged for millenia.  The other early modern species, Martelli’s Cat, is extinct.  Here is more about this lovely animal on The Ark in Space.

What am I Sappy Cat Blogging this week?

Thanks to David for this referral:

This is a video of a homeless man in Santa Barbara and his pets. They work State Street every week for donations. The animals are pretty well fed and are mellow. They are a family. The man who owns them rigged up a harness for his cat so she wouldn’t have to walk so much (like the dog and himself). At some juncture the rat came along, and as no one wanted to eat anyone else, the rat started riding with the cat and, often, on the cat! The dog will stand all day and let you talk to him and admire him for a few chin scratches.
The Mayor of Santa Barbara filmed this clip and sent it out as a holiday card.

It is Friday and this is Murphy, showing off his natural ability as a piece of sculpture sitting under a table in the living room.  Actually, all cats have this sculptural ability.  Murphy is being challenged by new kitty, Sam Vimes, who Murphy finds exhausting in his exuberance. Murphy (age 8), is more solemn and dignified, but he is beginning to hold his own against the youngster.
