What will I be sewing?

March 8, 2012

Squirrels!  Thanks to Robb via Regan.  This qualifies as knitting even if I do not personally do the knitting.  I love the look on this little guy’s face, and the idea of re-purposing lone gloves.  I know someone who “needs” this. Mui cute.

What am I pondering?

March 8, 2012

Gunsmoke, knitting, felting, explosions, blades . . .  Thanks to Rethoryke for this reference to a show at Present Company in Brooklyn called “Threat: Objects for Defense and Protection.”

The show features artist designed objects for self-defense – some whimsical, such as the felted guns, and some that are less playful, such as the coat hanger with a built in switchblade.  I really liked the doormat with the legend, “the neighbors have better stuff,” and the Molotov cocktail lamp.

What else am I knitting?

March 1, 2012

These mittens from ALPACA yarn from RHL Farms.  I wish you could feel how soft they are.  Did you see my post on the alpacas here?  This is yarn from these critters.  The white yarn is from Pinky and the dark yarn is from Black Diamond – two of the girls on the farm.  I believe both skeins are sport weight yarn and I used size 5 needles.  Thirty two stitches for the cuffs, increased to thirty-six stitches for the body of the mitten.

What am I knitting?

March 1, 2012

This comes under the heading of geeky, science knitting.  It is a double helix scarf.  The pattern was developed by June Oshiro and can be found here.  I made one before – this is my second one – I may finish it some day.  The first one I made from worsted weight wool – it turned out great.  I wanted to try one with a little more definition, so I started this one from 2 strands of fingering weight wool on size 3 needles.

It will need to be blocked, but is fun to knit.

Who am I feeding?

February 2, 2012

No Gunsmoke – some Knitting.  Attended the arrival of Carmen, a new suri llama at RHL Farms last Sunday.  As I understand it, the llamas guard the alpacas and alpacas are what RHL is all about.  Carmen was introduced to Bella, the other llama who guards the girls, and to the rest of the female alpacas.  Everything went smoothly.  At this point the sun was shining, but the day was cold.  Actually, perfect weather for the alpacas and llamas and their thick, soft coats.

There are lots of male alpacas (and llamas), too, but I just have photos of the girls.

I did acquire some yarn.  I love that the skeins are labeled with the name of the animal from which it came.  So I have a skein of yarn from Pinky (creamy white) and one from Black Diamond (dark brown black).  I am working on mittens – with the yarns mixed.  Later, I may knit some in a single color, or in some other combination. I will probably post the mitten pictures when they are completed.

Here are photos:

What am I knitting?

Happy I Love Yarn Day

I do love the socks. They are small. They knit up quickly. They are complicated enough that they are interesting, but not too complicated that I can’t watch a movie or something while knitting. They are useful and they feel good. I have gotten good enough at it that they fit right and don’t make me walk funny (like the first pair I knitted.)  Also, there is something meditative about the process – I’ll have to think some more about the Zen of knitting.

My words of advice – buy the best yarn you can afford. There are great washable wool and other luxury blended fiber yarns available. Natural fibers feel SO much better (and wear better) than the cheap stuff.  Most socks only take one skein or ball of yarn – 2 at the most – so go ahead and splurge. I (now) make sure that the yarn is washable and sturdy enough to handle the wear that socks get.  Still, I wash them in cold water on gentle and hang them up to dry.

The socks in the picture are from left to right: worsted weight yarn, 2 in sport weight, and the stripey design ones in fingering yarn.

I am a devotee of double-pointed needles.   I think that people who have trouble with double points are using too long a needle.  For socks, I think 4″ needles are ideal although they are a little harder to find.  Addi makes some good ones that are aluminum.  Metal is not usually my favorite, but these little needles do the trick.  I am also salivating over a set of  4″ multi-colored, wooden double points at Knit Picks.
