What am I noting today?

November 14, 2020

Leo Baekeland, born November 14, 1863, in Belgium is noted for inventing Velox paper and plastic, Bakelite. (Isn’t it interesting that Belgium put him on a stamp?)

“Baekeland received his doctorate maxima cum laude from the University of Ghent at the age of 21 and taught there until 1889, when he went to the U.S. and joined a photographic firm. He soon set up his own company to manufacture his invention, Velox, a photographic paper that could be developed under artificial light. Velox was the first commercially successful photographic paper. In 1899 Baekeland sold his company and rights to the paper to the U.S. inventor George Eastman for $1,000,000.

“Baekeland’s search, begun in 1905, for a synthetic substitute for shellac led to the discovery of Bakelite, a condensation product of formaldehyde and phenol that is produced at high temperature and pressure. Though the material had been reported earlier, Baekeland was the first to find a method of forming it into the thermosetting plastic. Baekeland received many honours for his invention and served as president of the American Chemical Society in 1924.” – Encyclopedia Brittanica

I love Bakelite and am fortunate to own some . . . not these, but some like them

Oh, No!

November 12, 2020

It’s not just the globe; it is the whole universe!

Astronomers at Ohio State University have taken the mean temperature of cosmic gas at different distances and ages, and found that it’s roughly 10 times hotter today than it was 10 billion years ago.

Here’s the link at New Atlas, but I am sure it is (fill-in-the-blank’s) fault.
