What am I noting today?

“The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara in Asia Minor. At the time the area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus’ words to “sell what you own and give the money to the poor,” Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.” – The St. Nicholas Center

Over the years, St. Nicholas Feast Day came to be celebrated by the giving of gifts of sweets. In Holland, particularly, children place their shoes outside their rooms at night and hope that they will find them filled with candy in the morning.

So, put out your shoes tonight and if you cannot wait, go eat a cookie.

St. Nicholas, patron saint of sailors, children, cats, and more.

Cold

December 3, 2020

I remember reading Farley Mowat’s book, The Siberians, and marveling at the cold he described. He said that the people build their houses on the permafrost – which then melts under the heated buildings. The houses begin to sink into the ground causing people to keep rebuilding their homes higher and higher as they keep sinking.

I try to read books like that during the summer when the weather here is steamy. I save stories about tropical isles for the winter.

Here are some people in really cold places . . .

These photos are from the Daily Mail and the Siberian Times

Doctor WhoVarious actors who played the Doctor in the TV series Doctor Who (from left to right): William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Matt Smith.

On this date in 1963, Dr Who was first broadcast.

Doctor Who chronicled the adventures of an eccentric time-traveling scientist from the remote planet Gallifrey, home of the Time Lords. The Doctor, a Time Lord himself, traveled through time and space in his unique craft, the TARDIS, an acronym for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. With an interior larger than its exterior, the TARDIS could take on various shapes to blend into its environment. Although capable of whisking the Doctor and his passengers to any time and any place in the universe, the craft was frequently parked on Earth in the form of a blue police box. Whether in England or in the far reaches of space, the Doctor and his colleagues battled a multitude of evils, including robots, monsters, and a twisted Time Lord. Certain adversaries recurred throughout the series, notably the Daleks, genocidal aliens armoured in robotlike suits who sought the extermination of life-forms inferior to themselves.” – Encyclopedia Brittanica

Dr. Who ran from 1963 to 1999. The series was revived in 2005, but who cares.
