Tattoo or not tattoo

August 24, 2009

I came across this RFT when I was internet strolling and though it was interesting. Made me stop and think about what kind of literary tattoo would consider. I do not have a tattoo, and while I can make a whole lot of smart arse comments on possible tattoos (invisible ink, glow in the dark, skin colored ink to cover my age spots), I won’t go into that.

But the idea of literary brings up the whole idea of copyright, not just the words, but the images – and the idea of ownership. Is a tattoo a work of art. The good ones are someone’s creation. Who owns the image. If you buy a painting, drawing, etc., you own it and can do with it what you will.

But should the tattoo artist be attributed when your tattoo is photographed?

Anyway there is a whole lot of discussion on tattoo copyrights. Some comments are here and here.

The best tattoo I ever saw was on my waitress, who had the Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear tattooed between her shoulder blades.

I just wish I’d thought of it.

That’s great. Love those ninja nuns of Dune.

Heh- good points! I survived 22 years in the Navy without getting one, and am too damn old to want one now… Most tats make no sense at the time, and less sense as one gets older, JMHO!

I always thought getting a tattoo was required if you are in the Navy – good for you for maintaining your individuality!

I’ve seen people with tattoos of cartoon art that I recognize. And I mention how cool it is they have a tattoo from a specific artist or cartoon. I’m always very depressed when they blink and say, “Oh, whatever. I just thought it was a cute [kitty/image/saying].” My thought is, it’s a hell of a lot more painful than just doodling someone else’s image. It ought to be more meaningful too. But then again, I don’t like pain and would not pay someone to stick me with needles.
