Is it Friday yet?

October 22, 2009

Had a challenging 2-day long meeting at the end of which a senior team member (with a medical condition) got on a plane for home leaving all of his medications in my office. He lives in a place that does not get fast delivery service. He was not answering his cell phone, so I was worried that he was not okay – or wouldn’t be before I could get his meds back to him. (He’s okay.)

Then my cat had an allergic reaction to her flea treatment and needed kitty steroids. Still not doing well and is chewing on her leg – we’re going back to vet tomorrow.

Then my other cat decided to act up because (check one):
a. he missed me (see above)
b. he was angry because he did not get to go outside
c. he’s a cat – doesn’t need a reason

So he hopped up on my computer desk and took out the printer. You can’t begin to imagine what burned wiring and cat pee smell like together.

So when I pulled up to the ATM this morning, took out my card, and at the same moment the “temporarily out of service” sign went up . . . well, I just snapped. ATM

Apples

October 8, 2009

Last weekend’s road trip was truly pleasant. Found some terrific apples and pumpkins…and then some mums. No donuts, but a surprise appearance by about 24 wild turkey crossing the road. Did I say October is my favorite month?red applespumpkinsturkeysgreen apples The turkeys are behind the fence – really – they are just very, very good at blending in.

In the mood

October Winds or the Castle of Dromore
The October winds lament around the castle of Dromore
Yet peace is in her lofty halls, my loving treasure store
Though autumn leaves may droop and die, a bud of spring are you

Sing hushabye loo, low loo, low lan
Hushabye loo, low loo

Dread spirits all of black water, Clan Owen’s wild banshee
Bring no ill wind to him nor us, my helpless babe and me
And Holy Mary pitying us to Heaven for grace doth sue

Take time to thrive, my ray of hope, in the garden of Dromore
Take heed, young eaglet, till thy wings are feathered fit to soar
A little rest and then the world is full of work to do
A little rest and then the world is full of work to do654074C7EF954DBEBE0D49AF48EED032-500

Better now

October 2, 2009

Pretty-Autumn-LeavesIt turned out Mr. Stinkyman was spreading germs that were rather nasty and I am just beginning to feel better. I have a colleague who says he wears a mask on airplanes and other enclosed spaces. He says he gets looks, but has not become ill. I don’t know.

September just careened past me and now the rains of November seem to be taking over my favorite month. October is national popcorn month, today is world smile day (although they do have drugs for that) and today is Groucho Marx’s birthday, born in 1890, and one of my favorite philosophers.

Looking forward to the weekend. Going to buy pumpkins, apples and cider…maybe a donut.

It’s time to catch your twelve leaves for good luck throughout the coming year.

Those are my principles and if you don’t like them, well I have others. — G. Marx

Home again

September 19, 2009

Got in late last night. I had a seat on the plane next to someone I came to refer to, over the course of the flight, as Mr. Stinkyman. He sat down in a cloud of cigarette smoke then proceeded to chew on his nails. This was followed by bouts of sneezing and snorting and, several times, the emission of a strange yet strong aroma of garlic and onions. Honestly, it should have had to buy its own seat it had that much substance.

A requirement for the flight, of which I was not aware, was that every man who bought a ticket had to certify that his bladder was the size of a pea (sorry). There was a constant stream (again, sorry) of guys back and forth to the head, so I spent most of the flight with someone’s behind in my face. At least Mr. Stinkyman was able to hold it.

Any flight that ends safely, however, is a good flight. I just hope that Stinky did not have the plague. Good to be home.434815943_5646db1217

NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center

NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center

Visited here yesterday and got a tour. Not a spur of the moment event, as we had to provide our names a month ahead of time. Through security at the gatehouse. More security before entering the building. That’s ok.

Not an in-depth tour, but it was interesting to learn the ramifications that geomagnetic disturbances emanating from the sun can have on things we take for granted on earth. Particularly the grid and GPS systems. Also, the material ejected from coronal flares can cause airlines to redirect flights over the polar regions to avoid excessive radiation exposure to the crews (who are at greater risk because they fly the routes more frequently than most passengers.) “What do the airlines tell passengers when a flight is redirected?” (and therefore longer) “Oh, they just say it is weather conditions,” said our guide, “they sure don’t use the word ‘radiation’.”

Field Trip

September 17, 2009

white-tailed-prairie-dog1On a trip today to Colorado. When I’m in a location that’s new to me I like to take a look around for differences in the flora and fauna I can see in my travels. Okay, I am always looking around for interesting birds and other animals. The hawk that sometimes visits my suburban neighborhood will always get my attention.

Anyway while driving from the airport, I was looking around for unusual (to me) birds, and did not see any – not one. But, looking at the undeveloped areas beside the highway, I did see some objects that did not look like rocks or stumps. Looking closer, they were seen on, in or near bare hills of earth. I am guessing I saw a bunch of prairie dog villages and the inhabitants were prairie dogging. Fun to see.
