This is a video of a homeless man in Santa Barbara and his pets. They work State Street every week for donations. The animals are pretty well fed and are mellow. They are a family. The man who owns them rigged up a harness for his cat so she wouldn’t have to walk so much (like the dog and himself). At some juncture the rat came along, and as no one wanted to eat anyone else, the rat started riding with the cat and, often, on the cat! The dog will stand all day and let you talk to him and admire him for a few chin scratches.
The Mayor of Santa Barbara filmed this clip and sent it out as a holiday card.

Happy Birthday to Chico Marx.

Born in 1887 in New York City, Chico (Leonard) was the eldest of the Marx brothers.  He affected an Italian accent (among others) and was the piano player of the group.

What Moondog am I Commemorating?

The Moondog Coronation Ball – March 21, 1952

The country’s first major Rock ‘n Roll concert.  It was held in the old Cleveland Arena on Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland, and was hosted by local DJ, Alan Freed.  Freed was the person who coined the term Rock ‘n Roll.

This concert, which brought together both a multi-racial audience and list of performers – unusual in 1952, was short-lived because it was oversold and was subsequently shut down for over-crowding.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the event.  This year’s concert will take place on March 31, at Cleveland’s Q arena.

What day did I miss mentioning?

Blast! March 14 was Pi Day and I missed it!  Granted, I was busy pillaging that day, but, no excuse.

This is not to be confused with National Pie Day, which is January 23, or whenever I choose to put it on the calendar.

Pi Day, however, is defined by the Pi Day website as:

Pi, Greek letter (π), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535…

With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational and transcendental number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

Pi is an irrational number and there is no getting a-round it.  Sorry.

What did I find in my garden?

It was a busy week last week, what with all the looting and pillaging I had to take care of.  I did, however, take time for a walk around the garden and I found these little white crocuses blooming. The first indication of spring returning.  This week the temperatures have been in the eighties and the bulbs are blooming all over the place.  Lovely to see and not typical for March in Cleveland.  Happy Spring.

What did I find interesting?

Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive, is now collecting and preserving “one copy of every book.”

My thoughts naturally turned to the Library of Alexandria, whose loss I still deplore.  Kahle said:

“We must keep the past even as we’re inventing a new future,” he said. “If the Library of Alexandria had made a copy of every book and sent it to India or China, we’d have the other works of Aristotle, the other plays of Euripides. One copy in one institution is not good enough.”

It is Friday and this is Murphy, showing off his natural ability as a piece of sculpture sitting under a table in the living room.  Actually, all cats have this sculptural ability.  Murphy is being challenged by new kitty, Sam Vimes, who Murphy finds exhausting in his exuberance. Murphy (age 8), is more solemn and dignified, but he is beginning to hold his own against the youngster.

Whose birthday am I celebrating today?

Well, mine – or at least my alter ego’s. Anne Bonney, intrepid female pirate, was born this day in 1702, in Ireland. Joining forces with Calico Jack Rackam, they sacked harbors around the Caribbean until Jack was caught and hanged. Anne fared somewhat better and evaded the hangman’s noose.

Anne and Jack are the ones responsible for giving pirates the skull and crossbones flag.

I particularly enjoyed the stories about Anne and Calico Jack as told by George MacDonald Fraser in The Pyrates!

Squirrels!  Thanks to Robb via Regan.  This qualifies as knitting even if I do not personally do the knitting.  I love the look on this little guy’s face, and the idea of re-purposing lone gloves.  I know someone who “needs” this. Mui cute.
