Happy Root Beer Day

On this day in 1866 root beer was invented by Hires. But I think some kind of root beer-like drink probably existed even earlier than that.
I once tried to make root beer. The process is easy. The recipe is simple. My mistake was bottling the drink in reusable glass bottles. I don’t think they make those anymore. The glass was not robust enough to stand up to the process of carbonation. I wound up with root beer bombs in my fruit cellar and was dodging shrapnel for a number of weeks.
When my son was little he told his Sunday school teacher that his favorite drink was beer. He neglected to say that it was root beer. Kids will do that to you every time.
To celebrate Root Beer Day, I suggest going down to the A&W and hoisting a frosty one.
