Pie for the Holidays: Have Yourself a Cherry Little Christmas
December 9, 2009My friend’s church used to sponsor Pie Night during the holiday season – and I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend. A program of holiday music was the lead in to the event. The children’s chorus, Cancel Choir, Gospel Choir, and sometimes a jazz band entertained.
When the entertainment portion of the evening was concluded, everyone got up and filed out to the narthex where there were tables and tables of every different kind of pie you can imagine set up and cut into slices for easy access. Lots of napkins and forks were available, as were big urns of steaming hot coffee.
The procedure was to file by the tables choosing your pie, fork and beverage and then go back into the sanctuary, sit down and eat your pie while the organist played and you conversed with the people around you.
This is one of my favorite memories of the holiday season and I am saddened that the event has been discontinued. I hope someone else reads this and gets inspired to institute the tradition in their own place of worship.
